How to Play
Getting Started
Creating an Account
- Navigate to the Play Now page
- Enter your desired username and password
- You’ll be connected to the game server automatically
Creating Your Character
When you first connect, you’ll create your character by choosing:
- Ancestry: Your character’s racial background (Human, Dwarf, Elf, etc.)
- Class: Your character’s profession and skills
- Background: Your character’s history and personality
Each choice affects how you perceive the world and what abilities you have access to.
Basic Commands
Once in the game, you can interact using text commands:
Movement
north,south,east,west- Move in a directionup,down- Move vertically when availablelook- Examine your surroundings
Interaction
examine <object>- Look closely at somethingtake <item>- Pick up an itemuse <item>- Use an item from your inventoryinventory- Check what you’re carrying
Social
say <message>- Speak to nearby playersparty <message>- Send a message to your partywhisper <player> <message>- Private message
Party System
party invite <player>- Invite someone to your partyparty leave- Leave your current partyparty list- See party members
Combat
Combat in Shadowwind is turn-based with simultaneous resolution:
- Declaration Phase: All combatants choose their actions
- Resolution Phase: Actions resolve simultaneously
- Repeat until combat ends
Combat Commands
attack <target>- Basic attackdefend- Take a defensive stanceuse <ability>- Use a special abilityflee- Attempt to escape
Tips for New Players
- Pay attention to descriptions - Your character’s unique perceptions can reveal hidden information
- Party up - The depths are dangerous; allies make survival much easier
- Communicate - Share what you perceive with your party members
- Explore carefully - Not every encounter needs to end in combat
- Learn your character - Each ancestry and class has unique strengths

Legacy MUD Client
The original ShadowWind MUD is still available! You can play it in your browser at game.shadowwind.org/legacy, or connect with a traditional telnet/MUD client to game.shadowwind.org port 9999.
